WELCOME TO 2015!

2014 had us on the edge of great hope when Senate Bill 273 was passed by the Michigan Senate almost unanimously! MAPP had never had a bill get this far and achieve this much success ever!

However, as the lobbyist said, “The House may be a whole different situation.” And it was. The bill was referred to the House Regulatory and Reform Committee—where it sat, and sat, and sat. MAPP and MPA people sent in many emails, calls and letters, but it ran into obstacles that could not be predicted. Talking to others who have experience in legislation, this is not unusual. It is totally unpredictable how a Committee Chairperson may respond to a bill, and thus it gets either passed or stonewalled. No wonder so many bills take 3-6 or more years to pass.

That doesn’t mean we are giving up! There have already been meetings in January to plan strategy. We already have Senator Emmons’ commitment to resubmit the bill to the Senate (she was our original sponsor, and deserves champagne and flowers for doing so!). Keep in mind that the lobbyist over the past three years has been (freely) supplied by MPA—demonstrating how steadfastly they have supported the bill. The new term for the bill is 2 years, so we have some time to work on this. MAPP will need to contribute to the cost of the lobbyist this year—which seems only fair—so your financial support is even more crucial. As the lobbyist mentioned, “This has been a time and effort intensive bill.”

It has come to our attention in talking with all of you, is that there are a couple passages in the bill that could be and should be clearer. This will take priority attention over the next couple months. In the new bill for 2015 we will try to rewrite these sections. Thanks for all your input about this. MAPP listens!

WE WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SENT IN MEMBERSHIPS, HAVE RECRUITED NEW MEMBERS, WHO TOOK THE TIME AND EFFORT TO WRITE, CALL AND EMAIL THE LEGISLATORS OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. IT IS PROOF TO US THAT YOU SUPPORT THE NEED TO GAIN INDEPENDENT PRACTICE. WE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU IN THE LOOP WITH ALL THE LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY AS IT OCCURS.

PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE WILL PAY OFF!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
